Thomas Howard: From volunteering in goal to his Real Bedford debut
For young goalkeeper Thomas Howard, a journey that began by volunteering to go in goal at the age of five has led to a senior debut for Real Bedford.
Since joining training with the Pirates, Thomas has continued to develop alongside first-choice goalkeeper Craig King. His progress was rewarded with an appearance against Biggleswade FC in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup, marking an important step in his football journey.
An early passion for goalkeeping
Thomas first pulled on the gloves at Mid Beds Tigers. When the team needed a goalkeeper, he put himself forward, beginning a spell in which he received either the Managers’ Player award, Players’ Player award or both in every season.
At 12, he moved to Letchworth Eagles. With no space in his own age group, Thomas played a year up, taking on the challenge of facing older players and continuing to earn recognition from his coaches and teammates each season.
His time at Letchworth ended when the team moved into men’s football. Still only 15, Thomas was too young to compete under the league’s rules and needed a new opportunity to continue his development.
Taking on new challenges
That opportunity came with Arlesey’s Under-18s. While still 15, Thomas also gained an early taste of senior football, appearing for the first team in a pre-season fixture.
At 17, he joined Royston’s Under-18s, where one tournament provided a particularly memorable moment. Competing against adult opposition, the young side lifted the trophy, with Thomas also named Player of the Tournament.
Alongside his club football, Thomas worked on his game through individual coaching sessions with Real Bedford groundsman Jack Mudge. When Jack stopped coaching, he recommended that Thomas contact his friend, also Real Bedford goalkeeper coach, Ian Brown (Browney), a connection that would eventually bring the goalkeeper to the Pirates.
An opportunity with the Pirates
Thomas’s early sessions with Browney made a strong impression. Recognising his potential, Ian encouraged him to keep working at his game and raised the possibility of training with Real Bedford.
Further sessions followed before Browney arranged for Thomas to join the club’s training environment. Having only just turned 17, he had the opportunity to learn alongside former keeper Tyler McGregor and now Real Bedford number 1, Craig King, where he experience the demands of senior football.
Thomas continued to progress, earning his chance to represent the Pirates against Biggleswade FC in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup in 2026. He performed well on his debut, reaching a milestone built on years of training, new challenges and a willingness to test himself against older players.
From putting his hand up when his first team needed a keeper to stepping onto the pitch for Real Bedford, Thomas has made the most of the opportunities that have come his way. His focus now is on continuing to learn and taking the next steps in his development with the Pirates.
Howard Reflects
Reflecting on his debut, Thomas spoke about his pride in representing Real Bedford and the support that has helped him reach this milestone.
“Making my debut for Real Bedford was an extremely proud moment for me. I remember watching the club three years ago when I was sat on the bench for Arlesey Town at sixteen, only to then do my first preseason with them six months later.”
Since then, Thomas has embraced the demands of developing at the club.
“Ever since then, the club has continuously pushed me to new heights and, although it’s been challenging, I have loved every second of it.”
He reserved particular thanks for Ian Brown and Craig King, recognising their influence on his progress.
“Even though I could thank dozens of people for the opportunities I have been given at the club, I would especially like to thank Ian Brown and Craig King. They have constantly pushed me and the knowledge and professionalism they have displayed towards me has only helped me on my journey and a huge part of me being able to make my debut for the club.”
That relationship continues to give the young goalkeeper confidence as he looks to build on his debut.
“I know both of them constantly have my back and will push me as much as possible to help me succeed”
Thomas’s attention now turns to the team’s ambitions for the season.
“Although we didn’t get the result we were after hopefully we can now focus on our main goals of achieving a good run in the FA Cup and bringing home the league title.”
Browney on Thomas's development
Goalkeeping coach Ian Brown, known as Browney, has seen Thomas’s development first-hand since they began working together two years ago.
“When I started coaching Thomas, he was a talented goalkeeper who was still finding his way. Since then, he has worked really hard on his game and has been training full-time with the first team for the past 18 months.”
Alongside his work in training, Thomas has gained senior experience through loan appearances at Kempston Rovers.
“He has had a few games on loan at Kempston Rovers at Step 5 and is now really pushing to get regular football.”
Browney also highlighted the support of first-team goalkeeper Craig King and encouraged Thomas to keep building on the habits that have helped him progress.
“The key for Thomas is to continue training as he has been and taking on board the advice he receives from both myself and Kingy. Kingy has been brilliant with him since he arrived at the club.”
