Real Bedford Women Suffer 1-0 Defeat to Gwalia United

By Louie Truman

Missed chances proved costly for the Pirates, as Gwalia United netted a late winner to deepen Real Bedford’s recent struggles.

The Pirates had a positive start to the fixture, earning a corner within the first minute; Bryant went close to scoring as Gwalia struggled to clear the ball. Real Bedford dominated possession in the early stages, and Bryant put a great cross in, but no one was there to meet it.

In the 14th minute, Bryant tried to slide the ball through to Grant, but the visitors defended well. Gwalia went on the counter, but Meale managed to clear the ball, Real Bedford had to defend at the back for a few minutes. In search for the opener, Bryant and Wood combined well to create an opportunity, but nothing came from it.

The game started to open up, and it became end to end. Gwalia went close to scoring the opener, but the Pirates defended well. The visitors went on to create another excellent opportunity, but Meale made another great save. It finished goalless at half-time.

Second Half

Just after the break, O’Meara found herself in a good position, but her shot was easily saved. Gwalia created chances of their own, forcing the Pirates into a crucial clearance, while Meale produced an excellent save just minutes later.

In the 75th minute, Charlie Bill made his first and only change with Chloe Logie coming on to replace Breon Grant. It was Chloe Logie’s first appearance after a short spell on the sidelines. Stovold made an important block on the outside of the box, which prevented Gwalia having a shot at goal.

The Pirates came close to scoring as the ball fell in the box, but Gwalia’s keeper reacted well to put the effort over the bar. However, Gwalia managed to score the winner late on; it ended 1-0 to the visitors.

In his post-match interview, Bill said:

“It was a tough outcome, to finish the game the way it did, conceding late. I just said to the group in there, I feel for them a little bit, they applied themself better than last week, we weren’t good enough last week”

Next up, the Pirates face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday the 12th of April.
