Real Bedford Women kicked off their FAWNL Cup campaign in style with a dominant 5-1 victory, as Zynia Delglyn stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick.
Real Bedford had a positive start in the fixture, dominating early possession. The Pirates won a free kick in the seventh minute, but nothing came from it. Moments later, Lily Whitelock found the back of the net. It was a clear goal for Whitelock as she finished her chance well.
Two minutes later, Zynia Delglyn scored the second. Delglyn extended the lead with a composed finish, calmly slotting the ball home. As the game continued, Charlie Bill’s side continued to dominate, and controlled the ball.
Zynia Delglyn found her second of the game, converting a penalty from the spot. The Pirates go into the break 3-0 up.
Second half
Early in the second half, Cunnison picked out Whitelock in a dangerous position, but her effort went narrowly wide.
In search of a goal, the Cobblers had a chance. Zoe Hillman delivered a free kick into the penalty area, but the ball couldn’t find anyone waiting inside the box. In the 62nd minute, Charlie Bill made his first changes with Sophie McLean, Melis Mehmet and Lucy Wood coming onto replace Amber Gaylor, Drè Georgiou and Sophie Byrom.
Zynia Delglyn got her hat-trick with a good finish from a cross. Wood produced a strong run into a dangerous area but lost control at the crucial moment. Mehmet reacted quickly, although her effort went wide. In the 86th minute, Northampton managed to get one back. Angel Dade found the net for the Cobblers, firing her effort into the bottom-left corner.
However, Melis Mehmet tapped the ball in from a Mylee cross which made it 5-1. It was an excellent display from the Pirates as it ended 5-1, with Zynia Delglyn winning player of the match with a hat-trick.
