Real Bedford Women Advance To County Cup Final

By Louie Truman

The Pirates managed to advance through to the final of the County Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against Luton Town. Goalkeeper Meale managed to make two excellent saves during the shootout.

Real Bedford managed to control possession during the first five minutes of the fixture, and the Pirates showed defensive solidity after defending a Luton free-kick. Bryant had a positive impact in the 13th minute, she took a free-kick which went to Warren who passed the ball across the goal, but no one was there to meet it. Just a minute later, Bryant had another free-kick which forced the Luton goalkeeper into a save.

The Pirates continued to dominate possession and kept trying to find a way into Luton’s box. In the 33rd minute, Grant made an excellent run down the wing, which led to a corner; Stovold had a shot on target, which forced the Luton goalkeeper into a save. The first half finished goalless.

Second Half

Charlie Bill made his only change of the game at half-time; Abbie Bensted came on to replace Mylee Baker. In search of the opener, Real Bedford continued to look dangerous with Grant creating opportunities and making excellent runs towards the goal.

Despite the Pirates controlling possession, they struggled to create any clear cut chances in front of goal. It ended 0-0, so it went to penalties. Both sides scored their first two penalties, but the Pirates missed their third. However, Meale went on to save two, which secured Real Bedford’s place in the County Cup final.

Bill said:

“An excellent battle yesterday, against a stubborn Luton side, in the end getting the job done and that’s the most important thing in cup football. We can’t wait to be in another final, all focus is on retaining that trophy again this season”
