Real Bedford showed early attacking intent, with Lily Whitelock nearly catching out the Plymouth goalkeeper as she received a back-pass inside the opening four minutes. Whitelock was involved again shortly afterwards, delivering a cross to Head, who picked out Nicola Puddick in space, but the resulting effort drifted wide.
The Pirates continued to look for openings. Drè Georgiou sought out Zyn Delglyn’s run towards goal, while Blue Bartlett-Antwi intervened at the other end to halt a Plymouth attack. Head and Puddick combined again midway through the half, only for a defender to put the ball out before Real Bedford could capitalise.
Despite those promising moments, the hosts took the lead on the half-hour mark. Dolbel tried her luck from distance, sending a lob over Meale that struck the crossbar before dropping into the net to leave the Pirates with work to do.
Real Bedford sought a response through Puddick, whose forward run created an opportunity for Melis Mehmet on the edge of the area, but her shot cleared the bar. Sophie Byrom then replaced Whitelock before the break, following a stoppage for treatment to the winger, as the Pirates reached half-time a goal behind.
Second half
A double change at the interval proved decisive. Komani and Bowers came on for Amber Gaylor and Bartlett-Antwi, with both substitutes going on to score as Real Bedford transformed the match.
Before the comeback began, however, Meale produced an important save to keep the deficit at one. Gilbert met Walker’s free-kick with a header towards goal, but the Real Bedford goalkeeper was equal to it. McLean then threatened at the other end, collecting possession inside the box and turning before shooting wide.
Komani supplied the equaliser before the hour. Reacting quickly as the Plymouth goalkeeper came to collect the ball, she reached it first and chipped into the net, punishing a defensive mistake and bringing the Pirates level.
The turnaround was completed soon afterwards. Real Bedford made their first corner of the second half count, with Bowers heading home to put the Pirates 2-1 ahead. Having gone into the interval behind, Real Bedford now had a lead to protect.
Komani threatened another goal when her header drew a save from Giles, while Byrom’s running continued to test the home defence. Plymouth remained dangerous, though, and Meale made another crucial intervention when Dolbel’s deflected free-kick fell to Lambe, blocking the subsequent effort to preserve the advantage.
Head then provided the decisive third. With the goalkeeper sent the wrong way, she calmly rolled her finish into the bottom-left corner to give Real Bedford breathing space in the closing stages.
It completed a determined comeback from the Pirates, whose impact from the bench, clinical second-half finishing and important goalkeeping interventions ensured the long journey home came with three points.
The Pirates head to The Dripping Pan on October 11th as they face Lewes FC.
