Leiston Leave Real Bedford Frustrated After 1-0 Defeat
By Louie Truman
It was a frustrating night at the Ledger Stadium as the Pirates were left chasing the game, with Leiston taking all three points. Real Bedford still require just one point to secure their play-off spot.
Leiston had a positive start to the fixture; the hosts had a dangerous cross which entered the box, the Pirates were also forced into making a couple of good blocks. Real Bedford created their first opportunity, as Josh Allen got into the box but was prevented from taking a shot. Just two minutes later, Allen was stopped again by another great challenge.
In the 16th minute, the visitors had a shot which went just wide and Ward had to make an important tackle in the box to prevent a goal scoring opportunity for Leiston. Just moments later, Stevens put a cross into the box, which found Weyman, but his effort went just over.
Leiston managed to find the opener, Rangel sent the ball in from the right and Mills directed it towards the goal, Blois managed to get the final touch to score. Moments after the goal, Setchell did well to win a corner, but nothing came from it. Just before half-time, Stevens had an effort which took a deflection and went just wide. The Pirates went into the break 1-0 down.
Second Half
Early in the second half, Watkins was penalised for an early foul, and the visitors wasted a good chance. In search for the equaliser, Stevens looked to curl one in the top corner, but his effort was kept out; Weyman also made a promising run, but he was beaten to the ball.
In the 58th minute, Stevens had a shot towards goal, but it was claimed easily; King also made an excellent save to prevent a second. Rob Sinclair made his first changes with Archie Jones and Lewis Hilliard coming on to replace Lee Watkins and Ben Weyman. Pushing for the equaliser, Stevens had two efforts which were blocked.
In the final stages, Setchell broke down the wing before finding Jones, whose effort went wide; Jones was also denied by a goal-line clearance. During five minutes of stoppage time, King managed to push an effort onto the post. The match ended in a 1-0 home defeat to Leiston.
In his post-match interview, Sinclair said:
“The better team won the game tonight; that one hurt a bit. I thought in the first half we got out worked which doesn’t really happen with this group, but credit to them. The second half we were better and had opportunities to get something out the game, but overall, they deserved to win.”
Next up for the Pirates is a final league home fixture against Alvechurch on Saturday the 18th of April, where we will also be hosting a Bitcoin Meetup pre-match. Get your tickets here.
