Hilliard is a Pirate

Real Bedford can confirm the signing of experienced midfielder Lewis Hilliard. The 34-year-old joins from our neighbours, Bedford Town.

Hilliard started his career at Rushden & Diamonds, making his first-team debut in the 2008/09 season. The energetic midfielder then enjoyed loan spells at Ware FC, Hemel Hempstead Town and Banbury United before joining St Neots Town permanently in 2010.

Hilliard spent five seasons at the Saints, making over 200 appearances for the club and winning two consecutive league titles in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 campaigns. He also came close to securing promotion from the Southern League Premier Central in the 2014/15 season, losing in the play-off final to Truro City.

After his successful five-year stint at St Neots, Hilliard spent time at St Albans City, Biggleswade Town, St Ives Town and Boston United, featuring in the National League North for the latter between 2015 and 2017.

The 34-year-old then spent four years at Peterborough Sports between 2018 and 2022, helping the club win two promotions at steps four and three to reach the National League North.

Last season saw Hilliard spend time at both Spalding United and Bedford Town in the Southern League Premier Central. After joining the Eagles in January 2025, the midfielder played a crucial role in the club’s promotion, as they pipped Kettering Town to the title on the final day.

On joining, Hilliard said:

“Excited to be joining the Pirate project with Rob and Ducks. Looking forward to helping the team climb the table and seeing how far we can go for the rest of the season.”

Sinclair said:

“We’re delighted to bring Lewis into the club. He’s a fantastic character who will add to the strong environment we’ve built here, and he also brings real quality on the ball. His experience and creativity will be a big asset to us, he’s a great fit for the way we want to play.”

Lewis will feature in tonights match against Bury Town. Get your tickets here.

Welcome to the Pirates, Lewis.
